The bronze plaque above, depicting Shiva, the first Yogi, was presented by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois to David Williams in Mysore in March, 1974 when he certified him to teach Ashtanga Yoga. Guruji K. Pattabhi Jois instructed David to hang this plaque on the door of the Yoga schools which he would subsequently start in Encinitas, California, and Maui, Hawaii, and name them Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute branches.
